Welcome to the latest edition of my newsletter. It has been a slightly better week here at East Devon Golf Club on the weather front, and there are even signs that the course may be drying up a touch...
Thank you to all of the members who have put their names forward to be Product Testers for me for 2016. A number of new lines are being released over the next few weeks, so I will be in touch again very shortly.
All three main playing sections of the Club have been in action over the past seven days, which is great credit to the groundstaff who have been working hard to get the course playable.
A 3 Clubs and a putter Stableford was on the agenda for the gentlemen on Saturday. The day was rather dominated by Richard Price-Hughes who was in the "Money Money Money" after returning a fantastic 41 points!
The seniors were out in force on Monday for an individual Stableford. The star performer on the day was John Pulman who returned an excellent 39 points. John Jago was the leading venerable vet with 33 points.
There was a decent turn out for the Ladies 3 Ball Team Event on Tuesday. The competition was split into two categories with a 16 and a 9 hole option available. The leading team overall with 67 points was Liz Connolly, Rosemary Pratt and Suzanne Jones. The shortened option was won by Jan Brunwin, Di Bourne and Jenny Dobel with 35 points.
Congratulations to all of this week's winners.
This week in the pro shop we have taken in our brand new grip bar as well as the latest batch of grips from Golf Pride which are all ready to help you start off 2016 in perfect style.
Did you know that you are advised to change your grips once a year, or every 40 rounds? How many of you can say they abide by that rule?
Well if you are unsure if new grips really can help, we have got a cracking offer for you. We will re-grip your 7 iron FREE of charge. Just pop into the pro shop and have a chat with a member of the team. (Note: FREE grip limited to first 25 customers).
We look forward to helping you.
Did anyone see 24 hours in A&E recently, the one featuring the retired fireman hit in the face by a golf club?
For anyone without golf insurance, take note. The programme told the story of retired firefighter John Willoughby who was accidentally struck in the face by a golf club at Deangate Ridge golf course in Kent. John, 53, was hit so hard that the club snapped and he had to be given emergency treatment at the scene by Kent, Surrey & Sussex Air Ambulance's doctor and paramedic. The golfer was put in an induced coma to prevent his brain from further injury before being flown by the charity helicopter to St George's Hospital in London following the incident in June. The programme shows the father-of-two arriving at the specialist neurological unit where he was sent straight for a CT scan with a suspected critical head injury.
John's wife, Allison, is filmed by his side throughout the ordeal. She said:
"John was in the fire brigade for 32 years. He loved the adrenaline, the excitement of what was going to happen next. So much has happened to him, he went to the bombings in London, and he saw such horrific things. To him it's part of his job. He would put his life on the line to save someone. And then he goes off to play golf and this happens."
Many golfers assume an accident like that won't happen to them, but all golfers, regardless of ability, run the risk of injuring another person or themselves whilst out playing golf.
