Welcome to the latest edition of my newsletter. It has been another busy week here at East Devon Golf Club despite the unsettled weather.

Competition news

The first round of the Scratch and Handicap Championship took place at the Club last Saturday. The field is nicely packed after Round 1 with 3 players, Mark Anderson, Stephen Phillips and Jason Rowbotham all in contention for the Handicap Section after rounds of 66, 67 and 69 respectively.

David Blick
is nicely placed in the Scratch Section with a steady level par round of 70. The conclusion of the Championship will be completed this coming weekend.

The Ladies Veteran's Championship took place at the Club last Tuesday. 46 ladies battled it out for the honours. Two trophies were up for grabs on the day and the first piece of silverware was claimed by Sue Fowler who won the Lorraine Caldwell Cup for the best gross score with her 85. Linda Knapton lifted the Val Freeman Trophy for the best nett with a 72.

The team of Teresa Tea, Julieta Steiner and Nicola Lowe came out victorious in the Ladies 3 Ball Team event on Tuesday.

Congratulations to all of this week's winners.

Tip of the week

How do you hit a draw?

We get asked this a lot, probably because so many golfers struggle with a distance-robbing slice. A soft draw is a great shot to have at your disposal as it gives you a bit more distance. However, there’s a big difference between a soft draw and a hook – so here are a few tips for you.

Try altering your set-up by aiming your feet and body right of your target line, whilst keeping your clubface aimed at the target. We want you to swing as normal; closing your body towards the target and taking your normal swing will mean your path is altered more naturally. Do this correctly and you should swing along your body line and right of target, which creates the desired draw shape.

Don’t forget to come and see us if you want any help with your swing, or if you’re looking to add a new shot to your armoury. Click here to request a lesson.

Video of the week

Just to prove that the unmentionables can strike anyone… this happened to poor Jon Rahm, playing in his first ever event as a professional. As if that wasn't bad enough, Shot Tracker technology captured it all!
