Welcome to the latest edition of my newsletter. It has been another very busy week here at East Devon Golf Club both on and off the course.
To start with this week, may I take this opportunity to thank all of the 200 competitors who turned out for my annual Professional's Day last Saturday. The day turned out to be a huge success with the weather remaining mostly dry and sunny.
The star performers were Bruce Chapman, Colin Thomas, George Thomson and Jim Colvin Coles and Jacob Tinley who returned a tremendous 85 points to scoop the top prize of a Motocaddy S1 Trolley.
The Midweek Stableford attracted an entry of 38 competitors on Wednesday. Scoring conditions on the day were far from easy and it was John May who came out victorious with a solid 36 points.
The Ladies were out in force on Tuesday for an EG Medal. The leading lady on the day with an impressive nett 70 was Jane Joy.
The Seniors had to endure some pretty foul weather on Monday as the first rainfall for many a week swept across the course. I believe only 3 or 4 players out of the starting line up of 82 failed to complete the course which is testament to their resolve.
The star player on the day was Clive Dixon who recorded an excellent 38 points.
John Jago was the leading venerable vet with 33 points.
Congratulations to Phil Keen's Seniors Team on regaining the Stocker Wedge. The event is played annually on a home and away basis against Tavistock Golf Club.
Congratulations to all of this week's winners.
Bring on the Ryder Cup!
For scheduling reasons, the final Major of the season was on us pretty quickly at the weekend – but the 98th PGA Championship delivered a thrilling finale.
There was a danger that with events in New Jersey coming so soon after The Open at Royal Troon, the tournament wouldn’t have the same buzz, but eventual winner Jimmy Walker and defending champion Jason Day provided a dramatic ending to the Major season.
Day’s stunning approach to 18, which set up eagle put the pressure on Walker, but he held his nerve to capture his first Major title.
So, that’s that. Well, not quite, because we still have the Olympics to look forward to, and no matter what your opinion on that, it will be interesting to see how it pans out.
Then, it’s the big one! It’s less than two months to go until Team Europe takes on the US at Hazeltine National Golf Club. The Americans will have another new Major winner in their side after Walker’s recent triumph, and with Dustin Johnson claiming his first Major this year as well, things are shaping up nicely – it could well be a classic.
