Welcome to the latest edition of my newsletter. It has been another very busy week here at East Devon Golf Club.
First action to report upon this week is from the August Stableford. It looks like the threat of gale force winds had a bit of a knock on effect on the entry as numbers were down on previous events. As it turned out things were not as bad as predicted and the event went ahead as planned.
Scoring on the day was challenging, but fair and the vast majority found it far from easy. The Star performer on the day was Jason Rowbotham who recorded an impressive 36 points to land the best overall score of the day and top spot in Division 1. Malcolm Pressey topped the pack in a closely contested Division 2 with 35 points and Eric Biddulph cruised to victory in Division 3 with 35 points as well.
Congratulations to Jason Rowbotham on winning this year's Cobbett Cup which was run in conjunction with the August Stableford.
The National Playing Fields Shield was up for grabs for the Ladies on Tuesday. 37 pairs battled it out for the honours in the BetterBall Stableford. The contest proved to be a closely contested affair with 2 pairs locked at the top of the leaderboard. By virtue of a better back nine the pairing of Linda Down and Sally Shackleton came out victorious.
Well done to all this weeks winners. Enjoy your golf this week.
A date for your diary
With the Olympic golf behind us, our attention now turns to the Ryder Cup. Before that first tee shot on September 30, however, come the wild card selections on August 30. This is when Darren Clarke will name his three players who will join those who have already qualified (see below).
So, how is Team Europe shaping up? The following names are guaranteed their spot on the plane to Minnesota:
Rory McIlroy, Danny Willett, Henrik Stenson, Chris Wood, Sergio Garcia, Justin Rose, Rafael Cabrera-Bello, Andy Sullivan and Matt Fitzpatrick.
Yes, some big names are set to miss out! However, the favourites for the wild card spots are Lee Westwood, Martin Kaymer and Russell Knox. You have to say, it's a strong side given the likes of Graeme McDowell, Luke Donald and Shane Lowry are looking like missing out… maybe.
As the saying goes, 'One man's loss is another man's gain'. Fitzpatrick qualified at the weekend and his reaction was superb - well done that man.
Now I can't promise you'll be on the Ryder Cup team in two years but if you'd like to make some changes to help you move from a golfer who sits at home and thinks...'if only' to a golfer that enjoys their game more and has a chance to compete, click here to request a lesson or lesson package today.
