Welcome to the latest edition of my newsletter.
It has been another busy week here at East Devon Golf Club, although the course has been a little quieter due to the hollow tining.
Tickets priced at £5 have just gone on sale for my Ryder Cup Sweepstake, which I will be running in conjunction with this year's event later in the month from Hazeltine in the USA. There will be prizes awarded for daily scores and the overall result.
The inaugural Green Keeper's Revenge took place at the Club last Saturday. I am not really sure whether the majority of the field knew quite what was in store for them, but the emphasis of the day was fun!
Paul and his staff had set up the course with a few obstructions, some interesting pin positions and a few other little challenges thrown in for good measure. Surprisingly, some excellent scores were recorded on the day and the eventual winners was the team of Trevor Reeve, Geoff Millardship and Eric Biddulph with 49 points.
The Seniors were out in force on Monday for their singles Stableford. The event proved to be a close run affair with 2 players locked at the top of the leaderboard. By virtue of a better back nine Alan Baker just managed to pip Chris Bird to claim top spot with 39 points.
David Mears was the leading venerable vet with 32 points.
There was an excellent turn out for the Ladies Stableford on Tuesday. The leading lady on the day with a tremendous 44 points was Jan Brunwin. Jan also claimed the Cancer Now Brooch by virtue of her performance.
Congratulations to all of this week's winners.
Drive for show, putt for dough?
This is one of golf's great debates: given the choice, what would you rather be - a great putter or a great driver?
Without wishing to influence your vote - and you can vote below on our website - we'd take a guess that most of you would go with the former; that if you are a confident putter and better than most, your scores will be far greater.
Others may say you could be the best putter in the world, but it counts for nothing if you're chipping out sideways from the fairway rough all day long - therefore accuracy and length off the tee would be preferable.
There's no right or wrong answer, of course, although how good does it feel when you bomb one off the tee? Actually, it feels pretty good when you hole back-to-back 30-foot birdie putts, too.
Vote on what you'd rather be, we'd be interested to know. |
