Welcome to the latest edition of my newsletter. It has been another lovely week here at East Devon Golf Club and we have been very busy both on and off the course.

Competition news

The First action to report upon this week is the results from the Ladies Autumn Meeting. The Meeting is run over two days with an individual medal on Tuesday and a foursome's competition on Thursday. Helen Chivers lifted the Autumn Cup for the best nett (69) and Claire Dowling claimed the Pheasant Trophy for the best gross score (74).

Helen Chivers also lifted the Mathieson Cup for the best Spring/Autumn combined nett prize with a 140 total and Claire Dowling won the Peggy Anstey Salver for the Spring/Autumn combined gross prize with a 154 total.

The Foursomes event on Thursday proved to be a bit of a procession for the pairing of Anne Sobczak and Julietta Steiner who returned a fantastic 45 points for a landslide victory.

The Ladies were out in force for the County Stableford on Tuesday. The leading lady on the day was the in form Anne Sobczak who returned an excellent 42 points. Anne also claimed the Golf Foundation Brooch which was presented for the best overall score of the day.

The Autumn Pheasant was up for grabs for the Men on Saturday. The event is played as a Foursomes Stableford and attracted an entry of 26 pairs. The leading pair on the day was Jason Rowbotham and Robert Dance who recorded an impressive 37 points.

Congratulations to all of this week's winners.

Thought of the week

Goodbye to 'The King'

Arnold Palmer sadly passed away but his legacy as a true icon of the game will certainly live on. Labelled as the first real superstar of the game, it is said that 'The King' transcended the game of golf.

Palmer became the first major US superstar and went on to win seven Majors, including four Masters titles - and his rivalry with the 'Big Three' dominated golf.

Tributes have poured in, from players past and present, as well as from the US President.

Jack Nicklaus said: "He was more than a golfer or even great golfer. He was an icon. Arnold was someone who was a pioneer in his sport. He was the king of our sport and always will be."

The Ryder Cup

The wait is over

Shortly after Jamie Donaldson hit his 9-iron to 3 feet at the 15th two years ago at Gleneagles, Keegan Bradley removed his cap and conceded. The victory was Team Europe's third successful Ryder Cup title. Will Hazeltine be number four in a row?

The wait is just about over with the action getting underway in Minnesota on Friday. You wouldn't have needed us to remind you, but with the tension building we wanted to do so anyway!

We considered opening a new poll: who will win, Europe or America? However, we know who you'll be cheering for.

For our American readers, we wish you good luck. Putting biased opinion to one side, on paper this looks like it will be a very competitive encounter. Much will depend on how the rookies perform and whether the home crowd can help wrestle the Ryder Cup back across the pond. Stand by for plenty of "Get in the hole" shouts and, dare we say, a few more chants of that nature.

Enjoy the action wherever you watch it. If you're lucky enough to be making the trip to the US, then we look forward a tale or two upon your return. We also hope events in America this week will encourage you to get out and play. The clocks haven't changed just yet and there's plenty of golf still to be played this autumn.
