Welcome to the latest edition of my newsletter. It has been another mainly dry week here at East Devon Golf Club with the course full of competitive action.
Success for the Emerton Court Team
First port of call this week is to congratulate Mike Whitehead and his Emerton Court Team on safely negotiating a tricky second round tie against Holsworthy Golf Club. Leading the home leg by 3 ½ matches to 1 ½, they knew the away leg on Tuesday would be a tough day to secure progression into the next round. The team duly obliged by winning 3 ½ points on the day and take an overall win by 7 matches to 3. They now face Yelverton Golf Club in the next round.
The May Stableford
The May Stableford was the main event at the weekend. A beautiful day greeted the 114 competitors, and all was set fair for a day of good scoring. The star performer on the day was Mark Heywood who returned an excellent 40 points to land the best overall score of the day and top spot in Division 1.
Simon Gegg led the way in Division 3 with 39 points, and the in form David Priestner took the honours in Division 2 with 38 points.
Congratulations to Mark Heywood and Simon Gegg on their qualification to represent East Devon Golf Club in the Abraham Salver later in the season.
Monthly Stableford
The Seniors were out in force on Monday for their monthly Stableford. The weather took a slight turn for the worst during the morning with some heavy showers sweeping across the course, which made the scoring somewhat difficult. The one player that found the conditions most to his liking was Alan Baker who returned a tremendous 39 points to claim top spot. Ron Jefford was the leading venerable vet with 32 points.
Ladies Veteran's Championships
There were 44 entries for the Ladies Veteran's Championship on Tuesday. A couple of pieces of silverware were up for grabs, and the first title was claimed by Nina Hawkins who won the Caldwell Scratch Trophy with a gross 87. The nett prize, the Freeman Handicap Trophy, was won by Maureen Reynolds with a nett 74.
Congratulations to all of this week's winners.
Control your advice… and clear your mind
'Shift your weight'; 'pull down on the bell rope'; 'bunt your hips towards the target'; 'drive your left knee'. You'll recognise these as pearls of wisdom all offered to help you make a better start to your downswing. Okay, so which one is it?
Golf is full of such contradictory advice; and though it is almost always well-intentioned, it just ends up creating confusion. And in a game where clarity of thought is crucial, a confused state of mind is calamitous.
Happily, there is a simple way out of this chaotic cul de sac, and that it is to make a conscious effort to limit yourself to a single source of information. So take advantage of our accessibility, subject expertise and years of experience and make us your one port of call. Your scores will improve… and your brain will thank you for it! Enjoy the Bank Holiday and your golf this week.
