Welcome to the latest edition of my newsletter. It has been another lovely week here at East Devon Golf Club and we have been very busy both on and off the course.
I am very much looking forward to my trip to Gleneagles next week to watch the Ryder Cup. It is amazing how quickly the event has come around, and if the spectacle is anything like as dramatic as last time around we are all in for a treat!
The First action to report upon this week is the results from the Ladies Autumn Meeting. The Meeting is run over two days with an individual medal on Tuesday and a foursome's competition on Thursday. Tuesday turned out to be a memorable day for several of our Lady members. Barbara Mellor lifted the Autumn Cup for 2014 after her fantastic round of nett 66, and Claire Dowling claimed the Pheasant Trophy for the best gross score with a 77.
Deirdre Mackness lifted the Mathieson Cup for the best Spring/Autumn combined nett prize with 143 and Sally Underwood won the Peggy Anstey Salver for the Spring/Autumn combined gross prize with a 175 total.
The Foursomes event on Thursday proved to be a very closely contested affair with some excellent scores recorded on the day. Coming out on top of the leaderboard with 41 points this year's victors were Ali Miller and Sue Owen-Pawson.
Finally this week, two notable performances from the Club sides to report. East Devon regained the East Devon Trophy after a comfortable victory at home on Saturday and the annual Picture Match against Sidmouth resulted in a positive outcome after a few nervy moments in the away leg at Sidmouth on Sunday. Overall result 26 points - 22 points, Picture retained!
Congratulations to all of this week's winners.
The excitement for the 2014 Ryder Cup continues to build. Who's your money on? It remains to be seen whether the US team will miss the injured Tiger Woods and whether a European team containing the world's best player in Rory McIlroy will prove too strong on home soil. Europe will start as favourites, but let's hope it's a competitive affair because there are fewer more exciting and enthralling moments in sport than a Ryder Cup that goes the distance.
Our hope is that whatever the result, more people feel inspired to take us this great game. We look forward to seeing you around the club and hearing your thoughts and predictions for this year's contest.
