Welcome to the latest edition of my newsletter. It was nice to see so many smiling faces at the annual Club Prize Giving which took place at the Club on Saturday evening. The event was well supported and members were given the chance to receive accolades for their achievements throughout the playing season.
It has been another disappointing week on the weather front and the heavy rain that fell throughout Tuesday which saw the ladies competition.
The only competitive action to survive this week was the Sunday Stableford. An entry of 28 battled it out last weekend, and it was Neil Sear who claimed top spot with an impressive 38 points.
Congratulations to all of this week's winners.
Finally this week, I am sure you will all want to join me in wishing Cameron McMorrin well in his new role as deputy greenkeeper at Okehampton Golf Club. Cam has been a popular, hard working and dedicated member of the greens staff here at East Devon Golf Club for a number of years and will be missed around the place. Rumour has it that he is offering to buy every member a drink in the Clubhouse on Friday lunchtime, but don't count on it! Good luck for the future mate!
We know some of you struggle to get your golf in when winter rolls around but if you need your fix, head to the range with these helpful tips.
Firstly, try to focus.
Hitting balls aimlessly is a common mistake that can cause more harm than good. Instead, pick small targets on the range that replicate the kind of shot you'll face on the course.
Secondly, use clubs you're not so confident with.
How much better will you feel out on the course with your 4-iron if you've spent time hitting shots with it on the range?
Finally, make notes.
Today it's all about iPads and Apps, but a pen and paper will do. Not enough people take the time to record their performances and identify areas they can work on. It's good for the confidence and gives a real sense of purpose to your range time.
