Welcome to the latest edition of my newsletter. It has been another very busy week here at East Devon Golf Club and I am pleased to report that it was petty much wall to wall sunshine over the Easter Weekend. I have just returned from a couple of days away with the family in France and I would like to thank Graham Ruth at Brittany Ferries for helping me to organise the short break.
A new formula on the competitive front was tested over the Easter Break with a couple of additional competitions added for the members, a Better Ball Stableford on Good Friday and an Individual Stableford on Easter Monday. Both proved to be extremely popular and were well supported by all sections of the Club.
62 pairs entered the Good Friday Better Ball Stableford and the winners with an excellent 44 points was the pairing of Neil Jones and Danny Barrett.
The April Medal attracted an entry of 90 last Saturday. Scoring conditions on the day proved to be favourable with a number of the field shooting par or better. The star performer on the day was Managing Secretary Julian Reynolds who battled hard to record the best overall score with a tremendous nett 65, and victory in Division 3. Bill Edwards took the honours in a closely fought Division 1 with a nett 67, and Neil Jones continued his winning ways to claim top spot in Division 2.
The Heslop Cup was run in conjunction with the April Medal and was competed for by the Medal winners from all 3 divisions from the previous season. Lifting the trophy this year with his nett 65 was Julian Reynolds.
There was another bumper entry for the Easter Monday Stableford and again with the lovely weather conditions scoring was impressive. Three players were locked at the top of the leaderboard after they all recorded 41 points. Stephen Phillips winning Division 1, Martin Hyde Division 2 and Rowan Edbrooke being the leading Lady. Steve Ross led the way in Division 3 with 39 points.
Congratulations to the following members who achieved holes in one over the weekend,
Julian Reynolds 4th,
Mike Hayes 10th and
Andy Scott on the 8th.
A Foursomes Stableford was on the agenda for the Ladies on Tuesday. 33 pairs battled it out for the honours. The leading pair with 37 points was Barbara Middleditch and Suzanne Reed.
Congratulations to all of this week's winners.
The wait is over
After what has seemed like an eternity, the first Major of the season is upon us - and what a weekend it promises to be. Will Rory pull on the coveted Green Jacket come Sunday afternoon and complete his career Gram Slam? Perhaps the big-hitting Bubba Watson will triumph for a third time, or maybe the immensely talented Jordan Spieth will see his recent fine form in the States come to fruition.
What hopes of a British winner? It's a discussion that pops up every April and doubtless you'll enjoy the same discussion in the clubhouse over the weekend! One thing's for certain: events from Augusta will surely inspire us to get out there and play more golf ourselves, especially with some warmer weather forecast.
Who do we think will win? Someone who hits a long ball, possesses a faultless short game and putts as well as Ben Crenshaw did in his pomp. Take your pick…and maybe click here to let me know your thoughts too.
