Welcome to the latest edition of my newsletter. It has been another very busy week here at East Devon Golf Club both on and off the course. 'Get into Golf' commenced this week with just over 20 new recruits beginning their journey into this wonderful game of golf. Week 1 of the 5 lesson package proved to be a great success with a good selection of very promising golfers.
The first action to report upon this week is the result from the Ladies Spring Meeting. This event is spread over two days with an individual Medal on the Tuesday and a Foursomes format on the Thursday. The individual Medal on Tuesday attracted an entry of 76 competitors. Conditions on the day were bright with a cool breeze blowing. The star performer on the day was Rowan Edbrooke who shot an incredible nett 66 to claim the best overall score of the day and top spot in Division 2. 2015 has been an exceptional year for Rowan so far and her success this week has seen her handicap being reduced to 18 which is an 11 shot reduction since the beginning of the year. Rosemary Pratt bounced back to form to take the honours in Division 1 with a nett 73.
There where also two pieces of silverware up for grabs, Claire Dowling lifted the Baker Cup for the best gross score with a 77 and Rowan Edbrooke claimed the Burden Cup for best nett score with her 66.
The second leg of the event took place on Thursday, the foursomes. 37 pairs battled it out for the honours with similar conditions to Tuesday. It was the pairing of
Ali Miller and
Brenda Somerfield who eventually came out victorious in a closely fought battle with an impressive 39 points, and by virtue of their winning score they will go forward to represent East Devon in the Area Final of the Coronation Foursomes.
The Spring Pheasant was on the agenda for the men on Saturday. The event is played as a Foursomes medal and the leading pair on the day with a tremendous nett 67 was Leigh Jones and Bruce Chapman.
And finally this week, the Seniors were out in force on Monday for their individual Stableford. A full field battled it out and it was a special day for Barry Devetta who joined a select few of shooting a gross score two shots less than his age on his way to winning with 42 points. Danny Barrett was the leading venerable vet with 34 points.
Congratulations to all of this week's winners.
Are you showing signs of insanity?
Anyone that puts in the time on the range deserves their success come the weekend. However, it's not just hard work that gets that handicap down or grooves that soft draw you've been working on. To help explain, have you heard the saying,
"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results?"
How true this can be.
Next time you head to the range, ask yourself whether what you're doing in practice is actually helping; maybe you're exacerbating a problem, grooving a swing path that's working against you? We commend those of you who put the hours in away from the course, but for the best results you want that time to really count.
A quick refresher or game assessment with the team could really help, after which you'll get more from your practice sessions - which you can then take to the course.

Have a great Bank Holiday weekend and enjoy your golf.
