Greetings from Trevor Underwood
East Devon Golf Club - PGA Golf Professional

Welcome to the latest edition of my newsletter. It has been another busy week here at East Devon Golf Club and the recent spell of lovely weather seems to be continuing.

Pride of place this week must surely go to the East Devon Junior Team who travelled to Torquay on Sunday for the Devon County Junior Spring Meeting. The team of Junior Captain James Underwood, Sam Corney and Max Handford had a day to remember by landing the Junior Club Team Championship and will now go forward to represent Devon in the National Finals at Frilford Heath in August.

Srixon Sponsored June Stableford

There was a bumper entry last weekend for the Srixon Sponsored June Stableford. The conditions were almost perfect with little or no wind, but with the bouncy fairways and greens and the deep rough to contend with, the field found scoring far from easy! The star performer on the day landing the best overall score and top spot in Division 2 was Don Peek with an excellent 40 points. Bill Wentworth won a closely contested Division 1 with 38 points. There was a similar battle royal in Division 3 with Richard Price-Hughes securing top spot on count back with 37 points.

The Pine-Coffin Cup

The Pine-Coffin Cup was also up for grabs at the weekend, and by way of his excellent round, Don Peek was this year's victor.

The ladies were out in force on Tuesday for the National Playing Fields Shield. The event was played as a Better Ball Stableford off ¾ Handicap. The leading pair with a fantastic 45 points was the partnership of Jenny Dobel and Maureen Reynolds. 36 Pairs entered.

Congratulations to all of this week's winners.

Driving's for show, putting's for Major titles

Putting criticism of Chambers Bay and the USGA to one side, if you managed to stay up past 3am on Monday then you were rewarded with one of the most entertaining US Open in recent times. True, it wasn't always enthralling for the right reasons as players and pundits queued up to have a dig at the state of the greens, but after Dustin Johnson three-putted the last, Masters champion Jordan Spieth was crowned the winner. The Grand Slam is very much on, and what a story that would be.

Despite all the criticism of the greens, it's somewhat ironic that the best putter in the world came out on top. Other players may have had a length advantage but when it came down to it, it was the flatstick that won Spieth his second Major, helped by his unerring ability to find the right spots on the green, time and time again.

So, with this in mind, it's time to get to work on your putting stroke; it's where you'll most likely pick up strokes on the field. Take a look at the putting article below and/or pop in to see us and let's take a look at your stroke, we may even find that a fitting will unlock your putting potential. Click here to send us an email.

Next up… The Open.
